And whether they’re athletes training for the Olympics or activists solving a great societal problem.. It is those with great focus who have discovered something life changing which is this:
When you're focused on a goal you're passionate about, it's easier to get where you’re going!
But is it possible to really create focus just by willing and disciplining yourself to have it?.. Or is single minded focus simply a by-product and secondary characteristic that stems from something else?..
Finding Your Passion Verses Finding Discipline?..
Broken down to basics, caring about something is the foundation of focus. Because the more you love and have passion for something, the easier it is for you to concentrate on it.
For example, can you recall dozing off or daydreaming in a school classroom or at your workplace because you found what you were doing boring?.. Thus it can be an uphill losing battle trying to discipline ourselves to focus on things that we care very little about and have no passion for.
On the flip side of the coin, if you recall the times when you succeeded in a big way, it probably had to do with something that you cared very strongly about. This is no coincidence.
Because Focus is interlinked with finding your passion and not discipline!..
For example think about they the people you know who really struggle in life. In most cases you’ll probably find that they have yet to find something they care deeply and passionately for..
And if they have found their passion they are frustrated because they are not nurturing or making room in their life for their passion to bloom and grow..
..If this describes you, it can really weigh heavily upon you. However, be encouraged the Good News is when you’re able to open your heart and truly find something you’re passionate about, happiness and success can be yours..
But How Do I Find My Passion?..
In seeking to discover how to find your passion in life you need to ask yourself some questions?..
What makes you cry?..
What moves you emotionally?..
Is it the images of starving children on TV?..
Is it music, art, poetry or photography?..
Is it speaking, writing, or teaching others?..
Is it politics, sports, technology or religion?..
Is it parenting and the love you have for your children?..
Whatever it is...
What is it that moves you deeply?..
Whatever it is...
What is it that makes you cry?..
Now just imagine the focus and clarity you’d have if most of your time and energy was spent on the thing or things that you care for and are most passionate about!..
You see passionately caring puts you “in the zone” where you are able to experience the perfect state of mind;..
And it is here “in the zone” in this heightened state of consciousness where you will find yourself motivated from the inside out, to take positive actions that move you forward. In fact, when you truly care and are passionate about something it's far harder to not take action!
Find Your Passion & You'll Find Your Focus & Success
So now that you understand what you need to become focused, let us get back to finding your passion. Which is of course the thing that you care most about. This process will help you find your passion, your focus, and greater happiness and success:
- Create a "Find Your Passion List" of the things which you are truly passionate about. These aren't necessarily the fun little things you like to do when you have some free time, although they could be. These are the things that you believe to be most important, the worldwide challenges you would solve if you were granted a magic wish...
- These should be things that you are so fascinated about that you would happily invest your life in the study of them..
- Prioritize your list. Put the items on your passion list in descending order (from top to bottom) by the amount of emotion you feel when you imagine yourself being part of each one(top of list = strongest emotions, bottom of list = weakest emotions).
- If you haven’t yet found something on your list which makes you cry(or moves you deeply on an emotional level), keep writing. And don’t stop until you have found the one that does make you cry. You'll know your passion when you see it.
Use Your "Find Your Passion List" To Your Advantage
Now that you have made your list, ask yourself how much discipline would it take to be part of those items. Would you have to force yourself to focus on them in an unnatural way?..
..Or would the simple truth that you care about those items so much simply result in you focusing on them in a very natural way that is true to the real you?..
NOTE: Although each item will undoubtedly involve moments when you have to enlist some self-discipline, the big ones at the top of your list won’t take much because you will be self motivated and disciplined from the inside out.
If you feel you have to force yourself in an unnatural way to focus on your current career, relationship, or any other part of your life, that's a great red alert sign that something needs to change.
Go to your list for ideas and options. Seek out a new career that fills you with passion and a sense of caring and you'll never have to “work” another day again. Why?.. Because your work will have become your play!
